Dominos Deals and How It came about

Dominos had admitted it themselves – they used to have relatively low quality pizza. Now for most people this admission was not necessarily shocking because it was untrue (their pizza was in fact not as good as some of their competitors’ pizza was) but because companies do not often admit that their product was sub-par. Most of the time we do not see brands respond to criticism, even in the face of public backlash, yet Dominos did. It not only took self-awareness, but also took confidence.

Admitting that your product was not very good to begin with does make a great deal of sense unless you plan to do something about it – luckily for Dominos they promised that their product would improve starting with the new marketing strategy. Their honesty draws a lot of attention from people throughout the country – both positive and negative because of this brazen honesty.

The frankness with which Dominos started offering self-criticism was the poker equivalent of going “all-in.” In the age of consumer control (thanks to the availability of the internet that gives everyone a chance to share their opinion), the precursor to better brand relationships have to be openness and honesty.  In January 2010, Dominos introduced the newfound openness about their inferior previous product, by March of that year the sales of Dominos pizza had doubled. Clearly, some people were willing to give Dominos a chance. But that does not mean that everyone is convinced.

Here lies the problem

Herein lays the problem for most customers, whether they liked Dominos before or not. If a product promises to change and you liked the product before, there is no guarantee that you are going to like the new product just as much. What if you did not like the product before? You probably already have a pizza place that you do like, so what incentive do you have to try out Dominos at the risk of throwing away your money on a pizza that you do not like?

Dominos understands you

Because Dominos wants to be open and understanding, they understand that Dominos deals need to be had for those customers who have absolutely no desire to try their new pizza. That way you get to try the new product (that Dominos is very confident in for a reason) and do not have to worry about paying full price for their product just to be re-introduced to the Dominos brand.

As a customer, one of the most important things is whether you like the product or not. A company can have some of the greatest campaign slogans in the world, but if the product does not satisfy your needs, chances are that you are going to be unhappy with what is being offered.
